Dalle fonti alle “lunghe e pazienti meditazioni”. Gli studi numismatici e sulla zecca genovese di Cornelio Desimoni

Il contributo intende mettere a fuoco la cifra della ricerca numismatica di Desimoni attraverso una rilettura degli scritti e delle sue schede di appunti. Il risultato è l’evidenza che in lui tali studi non furono una passione di tipo antiquario, ma furono legati a un profondo interesse storico. In questo, come nella fiducia nei dati delle fonti scritte, si trova riflessa parte della cultura positivista della storiografia italiana del periodo. Figlio del suo tempo fu pure il neo-municipalismo patriottico che emerge nei testi numismatici, incentrati sulle coniazioni della capitale ligure e dei Genovesi nel Mediterraneo, quali paradigmi di una storia monetaria europea

From the sources to the “long and patient meditations”. The numismatics studies and the researches on the genovese coinage of Cornelio Desimoni

The paper focuses on the research activity of Desimoni in the numismatic field through a re-reading of its publications and handwritten notes. It thus becomes clear that for him numismatics was not just an antiquarian passion, but it was tied to an historical interest. This fact, and the confidence in the data of written sources, reflects the positivist culture of Italian historiography of his times. Also typical of the periodo was the neo-patriotic Municipalism that emerges in his numismatic studies, focusing on the coinage of Genoa and of the Genoese in the Mediterranean, as paradigms of the European monetary history
